Kokandy Productions’ Jekyll & Hyde, now presented by Broadway In Chicago at the Broadway Playhouse, arrives with the momentum of a bona fide Chicago phenomenon. After its run at Chopin Theatre was extended again and again - an almost unheard of feat for an intimate, homegrown musical - the show has now been picked up for a full commercial engagement, marking a major leap for the company and a testament to the production’s electric word of mouth. It is worth noting just how rare this is: Broadway In Chicago almost never transfers storefront productions, making this pickup one of the most significant Chicago theatre success stories in recent memory. Conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn, this staging proves how a storefront success can scale beautifully without losing its bite.

This reimagined take on The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, drawn from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story, uses Leslie Bricusse’s book and lyrics to follow Dr. Jekyll, a brilliant yet splintering scientist whose compassion fuels his most dangerous ideas. He turns to self‑improvement experiments - attempting to isolate and remove the darker impulses that plague human behavior. Only after the town council votes down his proposal to move forward does Jekyll test his theories on himself, unleashing a violent alter ego - Mr. Hyde - that refuses to stay contained and seeks revenge on those who dismissed his ideas as reckless.

While Jekyll’s experiments drive the plot, the production grounds his unraveling in two sharply drawn relationships: his earnest, hopeful romance with Emma and his complicated, magnetic connection with Lucy. Emma represents the future he’s desperate to protect, while Lucy embodies the vulnerability and desire he can’t fully control. Together, they give the story its emotional spine, showing how Jekyll’s transformation fractures not just his identity, but the lives of the women who care for him.

Kokandy dives into the duality with sharp humor, vivid theatricality, and a pulsing score that turns the transformation into both a spectacle and a psychological spiral. As Jekyll’s world cracks - friends endangered, morality blurred, identity slipping - the production keeps the tension taut, balancing gothic thrills with a surprisingly human core.

What makes this staging stand out is its inventiveness: clever staging, bold physicality, and a cast that commits fully to the grotesque and the gorgeous – and, wow, can they sing. It’s no surprise audiences kept returning at Chopin, pushing the run far past its original closing date. That groundswell of audience demand is precisely what caught Broadway In Chicago’s attention - a level of traction strong enough to propel a storefront musical into a full commercial engagement. Seeing it now elevated to the Broadway Playhouse feels like the rare occasion when Chicago’s storefront originality gets the larger platform it deserves. In fact, upon entering, guests are handed stickers to mark how many times they’ve seen the show. Whether it’s their first visit or their seventh - the highest number I spotted - theatergoers wear it proudly, a small but telling sign of the cult‑like enthusiasm surrounding this production.

Directed by Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham, this production thrives on a razor‑sharp sense of style and drive. Van Barham shapes Jekyll & Hyde with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how to blend horror and heart into one seamless theatrical rhythm. A kinetic drive and deft wit run through the score thanks to Nick Sula’s music direction, ensuring crisp transitions and character‑focused vocal work. With a rare 15‑piece live orchestra on stage, the production’s musical power hits with a fullness and immediacy that elevates every passage. Brenda Didier’s choreography is the secret weapon — precise, playful, and radiating personality, it turns the show’s physicality into storytelling and amplifies the divide at the center of Jekyll’s collapse.

Kokandy’s ensemble fires on all cylinders, creating a production that feels both wickedly fun and sharply realized. David Moreland anchors the show with a riveting, shape‑shifting performance as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde, his vocal work and physical transformations giving the story its ferocious pulse. Moreland delivers a performance of remarkable physical and emotional intensity, one that stands out among the strongest I’ve seen. With visceral depth and vocal heat, Ava Lane Stovall shapes Lucy Harris into a woman suspended between danger and desire, her performance threading vulnerability through every moment of volatility. She makes Lucy’s internal tug of war feel immediate, giving the role a current that’s both seductive and unsettling. Meanwhile, Emily McCormick’s Emma Carew delivers a beautifully grounded counterbalance, her warm, expressive songs reinforcing the production’s moral center and offering the steadiness Jekyll’s world so desperately lacks.

(center) Ava Lane Stovall with (left to right) Quinn Kelch and Ismael Garcia and (below) Quinn Simmons in Kokandy Productions’ production of Jekyll & Hyde.

As Simon Stride and Spider, Quinn Kech moves effortlessly between clipped propriety and feral swagger, pairing sharp character work with vocals that cut cleanly through the score. A steady moral throughline comes through in Kevin Webb’s Gabriel John Utterson, his warm baritone and grounded presence giving the story its emotional ballast. Nathan Calaranan brings a dignified, resonant authority to Sir Danvers Carew, shaping each turn with clarity and restraint. Around them, the ensemble meets the material with full‑throated commitment - singing with power, acting with specificity, and charging every scene with the kind of collective intensity that makes this production feel larger than its footprint. Led by Jeff Award winners Moreland, Stovall, and McCormick, the ensemble’s collective impact makes this Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde feel vividly, thrillingly alive. The extended applause throughout the night were frequent and fully deserved.

The reimagined score is one of the production’s greatest triumphs, built on Frank Wildhorn’s music, yet reshaped into something leaner, sharper, and far more theatrical. Kim Scharnberg’s orchestrations give the music its dark, muscular edge, while Jason Howland’s arrangements sharpen its modern undercurrent. The orchestrations feel slyly contemporary and richly atmospheric, giving the story a sonic identity that matches Kokandy’s confident staging. Sula ensures every number lands with intention, whether it’s a brooding solo that tightens like a vice or an explosive ensemble sequence that floods the stage with adrenaline. And the vocal performances? They’re extraordinary – out of this world, presented with a clarity and force that elevate every musical moment.

The set evokes the grit and pressure of 1880s London without ever changing, a circular playing space with elevated risers that let the cast surround the action and heighten every moment of tension. Scenic designer Sotirios Livaditis, U.S.A., builds a world that’s intentionally fixed yet remarkably flexible, giving the ensemble multiple levels and angles to push the story forward. G. “Max” Maxin IV’s lighting and Matt Reich’s sound design sharpen that sense of immersion, shaping mood, focus, and dramatic impact from scene to scene. This talented design team gives us a unified environment that feels alive in its stillness - a single space that transforms through performance rather than mechanics.

Jekyll & Hyde comes highly recommended, not only for its inventive reworking but for the sheer theatrical command Kokandy brings to the Broadway Playhouse stage. Presented by Broadway In Chicago, the production (already extended) runs through November 8, 2026 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, with a runtime of 2 hours and 35 minutes including an intermission. It’s a bold, stylish, and wildly entertaining take on a classic tale - one that proves Kokandy’s storefront artistry can thrive beautifully on a commercial stage. I walked away from this production genuinely amazed, struck by how fully Kokandy has transformed a familiar title into something fresh, fearless, and alive. It’s a milestone not just for Kokandy, but for Chicago theatre itself - a reminder that the city’s most daring work can rise all the way to the downtown marquee.

Kokandy Productions is pleased to conclude its 2026 Season with A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music, a live adaptation of Anthony Burgess's dystopian novel that brings the cult-classic "horrorshow" to visceral, pulsing, terrifying life. Directed by Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham, with music direction and original music by Sean Ellis and choreography by Breon Arzell , A Clockwork Orange will play November 5, 2026 – January 10, 2027 on The Chopin Theatre Mainstage, 1543 W. Division St. in Chicago. Tickets are on sale now at kokandyproductions.com or bit.ly/ClockworkChicago.

A Clockwork Orange will be led by Reilly Oh as the charismatic yet sadistic Alex DeLarge. Hannah Antman (Pete), Jamille Calixte (Georgie) and Ben Harmon (Dim) will portray Alex's band of Droogs, with Robert Hunter Bry, Colin Callahan, Sydney Genco, Jaiden Lindsey, Tommy Thams and Lizzie Williams creating an "ultra-violent" world of doctors, officers, government officials, inmates, milk bar patrons and more. Stone TeSelle will understudy Alex Delarge, with swings including Jenni Babisch, Jeff Menezes and Skye Steury.

"Having both the beloved book and the cult classic Kubrick film as references gives us even more opportunity to surprise our audience and subvert expectations," says Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham. "Immersing the audience in the dystopian decadence of Alex and his droogs resonates differently in 2026, when choice and individual expression are both under attack. At this moment, should we be willing to sacrifice any part of what makes us uniquely ourselves? What first appears to be a story about curing evil in a rebellious teen may also double as a cautionary tale about using fear to create a more socially acceptable kind of monster."

About the Production

A Clockwork Orange lures audiences into a glass-edged, testosterone-filled underworld of a dystopian future. The explosive story of little Alex and his rebellious gang of Droogs is a groundbreaking and twisted tale teeming with sexuality and "a bit of the old ultra-violence." As hauntingly relevant today as when Burgess's book first published in 1962 and when Stanley Kubrick's cult classic film caused a stir in 1971, A Clockwork Orange is an unapologetic celebration of the human condition. And Beethoven.

The production team includes Eric Luchen (Scenic Design), Rachel Sypniewski (Costume Design), G "Max" Maxin IV (Lighting Design), Matt Reich (Sound Design), Syd Genco (Makeup Design), Keith Ryan (Wig Design), Kirsten Baity (Intimacy Director), Shane Roberie (Casting Director), Nicholas Reinhart (Production Manager), Amelia Osborn (Associate Production Manager), Corbin Paulino (Stage Manager), Scot Kokandy (Executive Producer) and Derek Van Barham (Producing Artistic Director).

Composition, tension, balance, light, and harmony come together seamlessly in Kokandy Productions’ revival of Sondheim’s opus, ‘Sunday in the Park with George’. Director Derek Van Barham transforms the basement of the Chopin Theatre into a three dimensional reproduction of Georges Seurat’s ‘A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’ for this beloved musical’s return to Chicago.

Sondheim was never known to write ordinary musicals. His smash hit ‘Company’ is considered the first “concept” musical. Wherein, the story has no real plot, instead themes are explored through song. ‘Sunday in the Park with George’ with whom he worked with James Lapin is similar in that it’s hard to describe exactly what it’s about, per se. In succinct terms, it’s a fictionalized account of how Georges Seurat painted his pointillism masterpiece while trying to balance interpersonal relationships. Specifically, his flailing relationship with the painting’s focal point, Dot. It’s as if Sondheim was exploring his own obsessiveness and how it hindered him in many ways.

‘Sunday in the Park with George’, which won the 1985 Pulitzer for drama, has a special connection to Chicago as the famed painting hangs in the Art Institute. The last time a local storefront theatre revived it was 2010. However, longtime Chicago theatre lovers are unlikely to forget Gary Griffin’s production at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2004, later remounted in 2012. Though it’s a favored musical by many, it’s not one often produced because you really need all the right ingredients to do this one justice.

Kokandy has gathered those ingredients for this imaginatively staged new version. Derek Van Barham, who also serves as artistic director has been noodling on this show for the near decade he’s been working with Kokandy and the result is simply gorgeous.

A large and talented ensemble is led by Kevin Webb as Georges and Missy Wise Vanderzee as Dot. The two are not only incredible vocalists but each are wonderful in bringing their characters off the canvas and into real life. Webb’s take on Georges is vulnerable, less stoic, less cold,  less fixed. Vanderzee is also much warmer and less shrill than the original cast recordings. Going from 1800s Dot to 1980s elderly Marie can prove to be tricky for some actors but Vanderzee does a great job of bridging the gap with humor and pathos.

Perhaps no other adjective is more apt to describe this production than bittersweet. Nearly devoid of melodrama and yet cuts right to the emotional bone. Under Nick Sula’s music direction Sondheim’s orchestrations are performed with such attention to detail that audiences hang around well past the curtain call. Some of the best choral arrangements ever composed for the stage finds their stride as the company and music moves fluidly through G “Max” Maxin IV’s brilliant staging.

Van Barham has made something special here. Moving the staging from the traditional proscenium to an in-the-round black box provides so much more room to play around with the spectacle of live theatre. Rather than aiming for utmost fidelity to the ‘Sundays’ that have come before it, Kokandy opts to create their own signature production that will be remembered as one of Chicago’s best.

About the Production

Inspired by the painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter, Georges Seurat, won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

"Sunday in the Park with George was one of the first shows I pitched to direct when interviewing to join the company back in 2018," says Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham. "It's almost a decade later and we're finally visiting this astonishing masterpiece. It feels like the right time. The show offers us a chance to reflect on what we've been creating and to look forward at what we still hope to achieve – both as a company and as individual artists. Sunday reminds us not to linger too much on the future or the past, but to focus on the present moment, to connect with each other in real space and time. What a gift that will be. What a gift it is to be together in a room, taking in a piece of art, having communal and singular experiences at the same time."

The large cast of new and returning Kokandy faces bring this musical out of its time capsule and into the 21st century with incredible vocals and unwieldy energy. In short, this cast is having a blast and so will you.

HAIR is one of the rare musicals whose songs actually crossed over into mainstream pop/rock. Perhaps most notably by way of The 5th Dimension’s iconic medley of ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Let the Sunshine In’ from 1969. However, one doesn’t have to look far to find songs like ‘Good Morning, Starshine’ and the title track ‘Hair’ used throughout pop culture. Re: Simpsons did it. Most people who have never seen HAIR the stage musical, or its film adaptation are at least somewhat familiar with its refraining choruses.

That said, by now HAIR has been lampooned as a shallow hippie fever dream known for simulated pot smoking and full-frontal nudity. Some elements of the musical might support the stereotype, but Urbi digs deeper into the lyrics and book by Gerome Rangi and James Rado and creates a much more cohesive and contemporary production than even the renowned 2009 Broadway revival.

While HAIR might lack an immediate plotline, it instead spends the first third of the show exploring the themes of the 1960s counterculture through conceptual songs that don’t quite further the action but are incredibly catchy. Claude, Berger and Sheila emerge as the show’s main protagonists, which is where things get more interesting.

Berger is the tribe’s ringleader, a young sexually charged dropout played by Zac Richey. His main concern is certainly the “free love” element of hippy culture and not much else. Claude serves as the show’s moral compass–another dropout who questions the ethics of dodging the draft and whether hippie culture is as altruistic as it claims. Sheila, played by Catherine Rodriguez O’Connor, is an activist caught between the two male leads. Her voice is showstopping throughout, especially during the arresting finale.

Style is an essential component of HAIR. While it’s impossible to stray far from the 1960s given its direct references to the Vietnam War, costume designer Rachel Sypniewski and lighting designer G “Max” Maxin IV, bring a certain modern rave aesthetic to Kokandy’s production. Those who choose to sit on scenic designer Eleanor Kahn’s conversation pit-flavored set will be richly rewarded by all the trippy lights and wild action happening around them.

HAIR is a largely ensemble-driven show and they’re doing their job well here. The character Dionne begins the show with a stirring version of ‘Aquarius’ impeccably sung by Chosen Mitchell. Honestly, any production of HAIR is only as good as its Dionne. You won’t be able to take your eyes off Mitchell whose vocal gymnastics throughout the show will make the hair on your arms stand up. Styled perfectly against the club lighting, Mitchell proves to be the show’s hidden gem. It’s a hard bar to clear as this ensemble is giving some of the tightest harmonies Kokandy has ever produced.

This revival of HAIR is one for the Chicago books. It captures the spirit of the 1960s, but with the frustrations of 2026 youth culture it begs the question, how on Earth are we still singing about more or less the same societal ills?

Directed and choreographed by Producing Artistic Director Derek Van Barham with music direction by Nick Sula, Sunday in the Park with George features a book by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Casting will be announced shortly.

‘Jekyll & Hyde’ returns to Chicago for the first time in over 15 years. Kokandy Productions follows their recent hit ‘Amelie’ with a much-anticipated revival of the 90s cult horror pop opera. Director Derek Van Barham brings his stylish vision to life with a cast of scary good voices.

Kokandy Productions has long established themselves as a theatre company that specializes in “misfit toys” musicals. In that regard ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ seems like a perfect show for their distinct niche. Though the original Broadway production was by all accounts a hit and ran for almost four years, critics were divided. Originally produced in Houston in 1990, it would take 7 years and a national tour before it would open on Broadway. The original Broadway production is perhaps most notable for casting David Hasselhoff in its final run.

‘Jekyll & Hyde’ has since become a fan favorite among those with an affinity for shows like ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Sweeney Todd’. Van Barham thankfully lifts the source material out of the gauche 1990s-style of overblown period piece musicals. Instead, his version is entirely contemporary with thrilling lighting and steam punk costuming.

One reason ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ isn’t revived often is that you need a really good cast of singers as this show is mostly sung-through. Kokandy’s cast is stacked with amazing vocalists starting with David Moreland in the dual role of Jekyll and Hyde. His powerful voice sways naturally between the darkness of Hyde and the fading goodness of Jekyll. It’s also a rare experience for a press night audience to hold for close to a minute for applause, but Ava Lane Stovall as wayward Lucy is this production’s secret weapon. Her stirring rendition of ‘Someone Like You’ brings Act I to a standstill of roaring applause. Throughout the show Ava Lane Stovall’s incredible voice brings the tragic character of Lucy to life in vivid detail. Her name may not be in the title, but with a voice like that, this is certainly a Justice-for-Lucy production.

Fans of 1990s era musicals are well aware of the cringy costumes and over-the-top staging that often overshadowed quality. ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ is surely a product of its time. Perhaps better off forgotten in some ways. However, Derek Van Barham treats this show like it’s brand new. Kokandy’s ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ can’t necessarily hide the meaninglessness of its lyrics, but it puts so much gloss on the production that lyrics feel incidental. This is a show about incredible voices and stylish staging.

Lighting design by G “Max” Maxin IV is genuinely striking. Faces are bathed in deep reds and cool blues, casting eerie shadows about the Chopin Theatre. The tightly drawn set by designer Sotirios Livaditis captures all the soaring voices and beautiful harmonies with such simplicity proving less is often more.

Halloween season is drawing to a close, but Kokandy’s ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ is here for the winter. Their near-perfect production breathes new life into a show many know but few have seen. If you missed out on this Blockbuster in the 90s, now is your chance to see an elevated revival. Go now or risk waiting another 15 years.

Earlier this summer, The New York Times asked its readers to submit their lists of the top 100 films of the 21st century. Scrolling through social media, it was clear the 2001 French film ‘Amélie’ was a millennial fan favorite. A whimsical rollick through Montmartre seems like ripe fodder for a musical these days so it’s no surprise the film was adapted for the stage in 2017. While not exactly a huge hit during its original New York run, Kokandy Productions sets the record straight with their Chicago debut.

If you took French in high school or college during the early 00s, chances are you’re familiar with the quirky character famously played by Audrey Tautou. With a show like this, your production can only be as good as your Amélie. Aurora Penepacker brings the character to life in a charmingly familiar way but with her a voice that is altogether unique and powerful. Amélie might be timid, but in this version her voice is anything but. Her romantic counterpart Nino is played with bittersweet sincerity by Joe Gionvannetti. Their chemistry is undeniable.

By now there is growing fatigue of Broadway musicals adapted from beloved films. A big reason is that often the music feels somewhat secondary, but Daniel Messeé’s whimsical score stirs up all the same kinds of emotions the movie does without oversimplifying the plot. The songs are woven into the plot and take the audience even deeper into Amélie’s rich inner world. A lively cast of actors and musicians provide just the right ambiance to feel whisked away to Paris for the evening.

The world of ‘Amélie’ at the Chopin Theatre is a very beautiful one. Kokandy Productions has the perfect space for director Derek Van Barham’s vision for this show. Nestled in the basement theater, Amélie’ is staged in a way that makes audiences feel as if they’re sitting in the cafe where Amélie works. Those who have been to the Chopin Theatre in Wicker Park will recall their “cottage core” aesthetic rich with antiques and shabby-chic furniture. Van Barham’s staging makes for an immersive experience that also really serves the emotional tone of the show.

With ‘Amélie’ Kokandy Productions proves again what makes Chicago such a thriving non-equity theatre scene. Creativity and talent intersect with their revival. There’s a world in which an ‘Amélie’ musical could be the cringiest thing to ever trod the boards, but instead Van Burham goes for something more authentic. His version has found a refreshing balance of the artful and the wistful. Haven’t seen ‘Amélie’ the film? No problem. The script by renowned playwright Craig Lucas is a succinct retelling without subtitles. If you’re feeling a little nostalgic for the twee early 00s, ‘Amélie’ is a lovely stroll down memory lane.
