From Australia to Spain, talent from around the world—including a Chicago theater favorite—comes to The Goodman for its 2026/2027 Season opening production. Performed by Montreal's multidisciplinary creative collective, The 7 Fingers, Tony Award-nominated former trapezist Shana Carroll (Broadway's Water For Elephants) debuts her new work, The Attic: Things I've Seen While Lying on My Back. Written by Carroll—who also directs and choreographs the production—the company of circus artists features Chicago's Tyler Meredith (Inherit the Wind) with acrobats Fran Alvarez, Melvin Diggs, Eduardo De Azevedo Grillo, Kalani June, Anna Kichtchenko, Nancy Luna, Santiago Rivera Laugerud, Alexandra Royer and Lucy Tan. The Goodman premieres The 7 Fingers' The Attic: Things I've Seen While Lying on My Back in the 856-seat Albert Theatre September 5 – October 4. Opening Night is September 15. For tickets ($34 - $139; on sale June 26), call 312.443.3800 or purchase online at GoodmanTheatre.org/Attic. The Goodman is grateful for the support of the sponsors of The Attic: Perelman Performing Arts Center | PAC NYC (Commissioning Partner), Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Allstate Insurance Company, JP Morgan Chase, The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust, Northern Trust, Abbot Fund, Katten, PNC and Winston & Strawn LLP.

From the primal vista of her childhood bedroom springs Shana Carroll's wildly imaginative, ground-breaking memoir that takes theater to new heights. Inspired by Carroll's mesmerizing life story, a company of fearless performers transforms memory into daring aerial feats that are as moving as they are breathtaking. In the air, on the floor and from the heart, The 7 Fingers brings its "thrillingly modern brand of circus" (Time Out New York) to The Goodman in this moving new work that embraces the fear and courage of being human.

ABOUT THE 7 FINGERS

The 7 Fingers (Les 7 Doigts) is an arts collective unlike any other. In 2002, the 7 founders set out to redefine circus by stripping down the spectacle to its thrilling essence.

The contemporary company tells stories using death-defying acrobatics with a life-affirming theatricality that is unique to The 7 Fingers. Since its inception, the company has expanded from its own signature touring shows to creating theatrical experiences as diverse as the very artistic directors themselves: original productions varying from intimate one-man shows to large-scale arena performances, Broadway musicals, artistic collaborations with renowned international artists and companies, production design and direction, special events, Olympic ceremonies, televised performances, fashion, art and music events, immersive experiences and much more.

Every one of these projects carries The 7 Fingers' unequivocal mark. The company has consistently spread its horizons by mixing genres and exploring new ways to tell stories. Fascinated by the human condition, The 7 Fingers create performances that celebrate our world, our time and our humanity. Their shows tour the globe and bring audiences to their feet wherever they go.

ABOUT THE GOODMAN

Since 1925, The Goodman has been a theatrical home for artists and a gathering space for Chicagoland, where bold stories spark connection, conversation and change. Now, as it enters its second century, The Goodman builds on that legacy with an eye toward the future. Under the leadership of Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins, the theater continues to champion new work—following hundreds of plays developed and a national reputation for commissioning and premiering original stories by living writers—while reimagining classics and produce large-scale musicals.

But The Goodman's reach today extends beyond its home in the heart of the Loop. From the intimate magic of The Magic Parlour, now in its third year, to the boundary-pushing world of Theater of the Mind—an immersive experience that blurs the lines between science, storytelling and sensation—and from citywide initiatives like 100 Free Acts of Theater to partnerships with artists and companies across Chicago and around the world, The Goodman is expanding what theater can be, and where it can live.

At its core, The Goodman is driven by a belief that a more empathetic, more connected city is built one story at a time. Generation-spanning productions and programs offer theater for a lifetime—from babies and young children to teens, adults and seniors—including Theater for the Very Young (ages 0–5) and the beloved annual A Christmas Carol, which has welcomed audiences for five decades. Education and Engagement programs, led by Clifford Director Jared Bellot and based in the Alice Rapoport Center, use the tools of theater to spark imagination, reflection and belonging—reaching thousands each year, the majority from underserved communities.

With nearly 200 world or American premieres, two Pulitzer Prizes, 22 Tony Awards and nearly 200 Joseph Jefferson Awards, The Goodman remains a defining force in American theater—and the first to produce all 10 plays of August Wilson's American Century Cycle. The theater also frequently serves as a production partner—from national and international companies to Chicago's Off-Loop theaters—to help amplify a wide range of theatrical voices.

Founded by William O. Goodman and his family in memory of playwright Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, the theater carries forward a legacy of artistic ambition and civic generosity. With the help of Mr. Goodman's descendants—Albert Ivar Goodman and his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton—that spirit continues to shape its future as The Goodman expands its impact across Chicago and beyond. Marsha Cruzan is Chair of the Goodman Theatre Board of Trustees; Diane Landgren is Women's Board President; and Kelli Garcia is president of the Scenemakers Board for Young Professionals.

The Goodman stands on the unceded homelands of the Council of the Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations—and acknowledges the many other Nations for whom this land now called Chicago has long been home, including the Myaamia, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac and Fox, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Kickapoo, and Mascouten. The Goodman is proud to partner with the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum (Gichigamiin-Museum.org) and the Center for Native Futures (CenterForNativeFutures.org)—organizations devoted to honoring Indigenous stories, preserving cultural memory, and deepening public understanding.

About Steppenwolf Theatre Company:

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is the nation's premier Ensemble Theater with 50 members who are among the top actors, playwrights and directors in the field. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions have made this theatre legendary. From the early phenomenon of Balm in Gilead, to The Grapes of Wrath, August: Osage County, Downstate, The Brother/Sister Plays, and more recently, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Purpose, Steppenwolf Theatre has had a long-running and undeniable impact on American Theatre and Chicago's cultural landscape. Founded in 1974 by Terry Kinney, Jeff Perry and Gary Sinise, Steppenwolf started as a group of friends in their teens and early 20s performing in the basement of a school in Highland Park, Illinois. Today, the company's artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theatre, whose vitality is defined by its appetite for bold and innovative work. Every aspect of Steppenwolf is rooted in its Ensemble ethos, from the intergenerational artistic programming to the multi-genre performance series LookOut, to the nationally recognized work of Steppenwolf Education and Engagement which serves nearly 15,000 teens annually. While grounded in the Chicago community, more than 40 original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success nationally and internationally, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway and Dublin. Steppenwolf also holds accolades that include the National Medal of Arts, 14 Tony Awards, two Pulitzer Prize-winning commissions and more. Led by Artistic Directors Glenn Davis and Audrey Francis, Executive Director E. A quick history lesson: Anne Bonny and Mary Read are two of history’s most famous female pirates. Both women disguised themselves as men and sailed under the command of Captain Calico Jack Rackham, where they became part of the same crew. There has long been speculation that they may have had a romantic relationship, though there is no widely accepted historical evidence to support it.

That essentially sums up the history covered by yo ho., SMJ’s original play which reimagines Anne and Mary’s story in a very queer, very explicit way. Described as “equal parts historical fantasy and introspective sexual and gender exploration,” the production has far more interest in the latter than the former. It uses these historical figures less as a subject to interrogate than as a launching point for a silly, raunchy, gay pirate adventure.

This is not inherently a bad thing – director JD Caudill’s production is clearly committed to creating both queer joy and comedic sexual exploration on stage, and for queer artists to come together to make something. yo ho. may not be as historically based or polished as it markets itself to be, but with accurate marketing, there is definitely an audience to love the show.

The cast is the heart of the production. The outrageous script makes room for the entire cast to throw themselves into spicy, raunchy, hilarious, and sometimes sacrilegious moments for multiple characters, whether that be ensemble playing multiple roles or one character with two alter egos. Two particular standouts were William Delforge (Chad/James) and Brittani Yawn (Vanessa) – both cast members carried the production, playing multiple roles with great comedic timing and execution, and larger-than-life physical comedy. Funny on their own, Delforge and Yawn only became more powerful when playing off of each other.

(L to R) Rachel Sleek Bañuelos and Sierra Bryn in the world premiere of yo ho.

This constant-humor approach does limit the nuance of character relationships that can be developed; however, it does not mean that the show was void of emotionally moving moments. Rachel Sleek-Banuelos’ eleventh-hour monologue is stunningly moving; despite the moment feeling a bit out of place in the script overall, Banuelos temporarily silences the theatre and lands it perfectly regardless. However, in the end, the play’s ending unfortunately does lean into a gimmick that feels more abrupt than satisfying.

For a company called Babes with Blades, though, the clearest strength is exactly where it should be: the fighting. The stage combat is consistently impressive, but the swordplay in particular is fast, dynamic, and genuinely intimidating from only a few feet away. Even when the choreography is visibly choreographed, it never becomes mechanical. Carly “CB” Carson’s fight choreography has momentum and danger, nearly intimidating to be sitting mere feet from.

The technical production also feels surprisingly considered for the polish of the show. The set creates a convincing pirate-world atmosphere within The Edge’s black-box space, though some scene changes feel more complicated than the material requires. In general, yo ho. can feel disproportionately unserious compared with its technical ambition: the energy is closer to an enthusiastic college-theater production than the fully realized historical fantasy its marketing material promises.

Still, there is an audience for this show. The theatregoer who wants a messy, high-energy night of queer pirate smut – perhaps with friends after a nearby Edgewater happy hour – may have a genuinely great time. For everyone else, yo ho. is best approached with the understanding that it is not a sweeping historical drama, but an overwhelmingly unserious fantasy which features strong sword fighting and a few flashes of something more.

yo ho. is running Thursdays through Sundays at The Edge Off-Broadway through August 29th. Tickets are available at BabesWithBlades.org

Chicago Magic Lounge welcomes back acclaimed magician David Parr as its Fall Artist in Residence with David Parr: Time Traveler, a new theatrical experience that uncovers the places where history, mystery and magic collide. A winner of the coveted Penn & Teller: Fool Us trophy and the Lounge's first Artist in Residence, Parr returns Wednesdays at 7 p.m., October 7 – December 16, inviting audiences to explore forgotten legends, remarkable true stories and unexplained mysteries—where history is often stranger than fiction.

History has secrets. Magic helps uncover them.

Combining captivating storytelling with masterful sleight of hand, David Parr: Time Traveler uncovers remarkable moments from the past where fact and folklore blur together. Audiences will encounter a 16th-century book on magic so controversial it was ordered destroyed by a king, pull up a chair at Deadwood's legendary Dead Man's Hand poker game, glimpse Thomas Edison's fascination with the paranormal, and even venture into the mysteries of fortune telling and prophetic dreams.

Every performance is a reminder that the world is still full of surprises and mysteries, and that history is often far stranger than the version we learn in school.

"This show is like finding a box full of cool stuff in a forgotten corner of the attic," said Parr. "It's a reminder that we live in a world of surprises and mysteries. Beyond that, it reminds us that history is much weirder than the version we learn in school."

David Parr: Time Traveler plays Wednesdays at 7 p.m., October 7 – December 16, 2026. Tickets are $44 (Standard) and $50 (Front Row), plus applicable fees. Tickets for all Chicago Magic Lounge performances are available at the box office, (312) 366-4500 or online at chicagomagiclounge.com.

Each evening begins with close-up magic performed right at guests' tables by Chicago Magic Lounge's talented house magicians. Between performances, audiences can enjoy craft cocktails, small plates and the vintage ambiance of the Harry Blackstone Cabaret.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announces the cast and creative team for Play On!, which opens the Theater's 40th Anniversary Season. This jazz musical tells Shakespeare's beloved comedy Twelfth Night through the timeless tunes of quintessential American composer Duke Ellington. Play On! was originally conceived by director Sheldon Epps, who returns to the three-time Tony-nominated musical with a newly updated book by Cheryl L. West for the first time in 20 years to stage Shakespeare's story for a new generation. Broadway veterans Hailee Kaleem Wright, Krystal Joy Brown, Alan H Green, James Harkness, and Edred Utomi lead a cast that also features Uria Bennett, Kaylah Janssen, James Earl Jones II, Marquez Linder, Alanna Lovely, Selena Robinson, Dylan C. Smith, Joey Stone, Shelbi Voss, and Danny Dwaine Wells II. The production runs September 11–October 18 in The Yard.

Aspiring songwriter Vy takes the A-Train to Harlem in the swinging 1930s with big dreams of a career in showbiz, only to find that it's a man's world. She disguises herself to reach the inner circle of renowned band leader, The Duke—but plans backfire when she catches the eye of Lady Liv, the star singer of the Cotton Club, and mistaken identities make way for romance. Music is indeed the food of love with big band pizzazz and Ellington's hit songs "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "I'm Beginning to the See the Light," and many more.

"Over the last couple of years, Cheryl and I took a deep dive back into the book of the show," shared Epps. "Our credo in all of this has been to enhance and heighten the celebration of Black Excellence, Black Brilliance, and Black JOY. The Excellence being the celebration of the artists who inspired these characters and the actual cast onstage; the Brilliance is that of Mr. Shakespeare and the Duke of Ellington; and the Joy is consistently the experience of the audience that we hope to achieve with each performance. In simple but very effective ways, we have and will continue to focus on the fact that the show is all about the search for LOVE, and removing the masks that we often wear that keep that hoped-for goal from entering our lives fully."

"Play On! couldn't be a better production with which to begin our 40th Anniversary Season," added CST Artistic Director Edward Hall. "It perfectly reimagines Shakespeare's story with the indelible music of Duke Ellington, two geniuses of their craft whose work transcends time to speak directly to us today. This show promises virtuosic performances and infectious joy, and we look forward to sharing it with our audiences this fall."

Playing the role of Vy is Hailee Kaleem Wright, who recently ended a run as Satine in Broadway's Moulin Rouge!, and whose other Broadway credits include Catherine of Aragon in SIX and the original cast of Paradise Square, including the pre-Broadway run in Chicago. In the role of Lady Liv is Krystal Joy Brown, who played Gussie Carnegie in the Tony Award-winning 2023 revival of Merrily We Roll Along, and whose other Broadway credits include Hamilton, Big Fish, and Motown the Musical. Alan H Green plays Rev, returning to Play On! nearly 30 years after appearing in the original Broadway cast. His other Broadway credits include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, School of Rock, and Sister Act, and he was most recently seen as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in Marriott Theatre's production of A Little Night Music. James Harkness, who plays Jester, was in the original Broadway cast of Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and The Color Purple, among many other credits. In the role of The Duke is Edred Utomi who recently ended a run as Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton on Broadway, after touring the US with the production for many years.

In the role of Sweets, three-time Jeff Award nominee James Earl Jones II returns to CST after playing Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast and Donkey in Shrek the Musical. His other credits include the national tours of Company, Come From Away, and Porgy and Bess, and recent Chicago credits include Theater of the Mind at Goodman Theatre, and Catch Me If You Can and Titanic at Marriott Theatre. Alanna Lovely plays Miss Mary, with Chicago credits including Big White Fog at Court Theatre and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Little Mermaid, Ain't Misbehavin', Guys and Dolls, and Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella at Drury Lane Theatre. In the role of CC is Kaylah Janssen, who recently graduated with an MFA in Acting from the Theatre School at DePaul, where she appeared in Ride the Cyclone and The Lieutenant's Dream.

The ensemble features Uria Bennett (Personality: The Lloyd Price Musical at the Studebaker Theatre), Marquez Linder (Mrs. Doubtfire National Tour, Tootsie National Tour), Selena Robinson (Cats at Paramount Theatre), Dylan C. Smith (I Was There When The Blues Was Red Hot with eta Creative Arts), Joey Stone (Mrs. Doubtfire National Tour and Motown the Musical on Broadway and National Tour), Shelbi Voss (The Color Purple at Goodman Theatre, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Paramount Theatre), and Danny Dwaine Wells II (Shrek the Musical at Marriott Theatre, Cabaret at Paramount Theatre).

Director Sheldon Epps spent two decades as Artistic Director of the renowned Pasadena Playhouse for two decades, where he first developed Play On!, and still acts as the company's Artistic Director Emeritus. He currently serves as Senior Artistic Advisor at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Epps has directed numerous plays and musicals at many of the country's major theatres, including the Roundabout, Manhattan Theatre Club, the Guthrie, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Arena Stage, Ford's Theatre and the Goodman Theatre. He conceived and directed the Broadway productions of both Play On! and Blues In the Night, which both received Tony Award nominations. Blues in the Night also was nominated as Best Musical for the prestigious Olivier Award in London. He co-directed the Tony-nominated production of Baby It's You! Epps has also had a busy career as a television director, helming episodes of shows such as Frasier, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Girlfriends, and many others. His memoir, My Own Directions: A Black Man's Journey in the American Theatre, was published in 2022.

Joining Epps on the creative team are Choreographer Edgar Godineaux (Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama Desk nominee for The Harder They Come at the Public Theater), Music Director Theodis Rodgers, Jr. (world premiere of safronia at Lyric Opera), Scenic Designer Beowulf Boritt (Tony Award winner for New York, New York and Act One), Costume Designer An-Lin Dauber (credits at ACT, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Rep, and many more), Lighting Designer Adam Honoré (Tony Award nominee for Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Ragtime), Sound Designer Ray Nardelli (Lookingglass Alice at Lookingglass Theatre Company and Off-Broadway, Fault, Shakespeare in Love, Sense and Sensibility, The Tempest and more at CST), and Wig, Hair and Makeup Designer Kevin S. Iceboy! Sets New Goodman Box Office Record

Today, Goodman Theatre achieves a new milestone in its 100th anniversary season: Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins announce that Iceboy! or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write "The Iceman Cometh" starring Emmy Award winners Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss, has become the theater's all-time best-selling production. Running at 99% capacity, Iceboy! has welcomed more than 53,000 audience members from across the nation and 23 countries—breaking previous top attendance records held by War Paint (52,851 in 2016) and The Who's Tommy (50,980 in 2023)—with two weeks remaining in its three-time extended run. This success joins that of the downtown debut of Raven Theatre's Octet (extended through August 2) and the improv stand TJ & Dave (tonight, July 31, August 1)—both of which have gone clean. In addition, free outdoor performances of the family-friendly The Lizard y El Sol have drawn record crowds—more than 1,200 people—during the first week of its 12-park tour with destinations from Ashburn Park to Norwood Park, prompting a four-performance extension at Chicago Public Libraries (Little Italy, Uptown, Altgeld Gardens and McKinley Park). The Goodman's productions of Dennis Watkins' The Magic Parlour and David Byrne and Mala Gaonkar's Theater of the Mind continue extended runs. For tickets and more information about each offering, visit GoodmanTheatre.org.

"This week alone, The Goodman will serve 13,000 Chicagoans with programs in neighborhoods all over the city. This is The Goodman at 100, meeting audiences in this moment, and we could not be more proud," said John Collins, Executive Director. "By design, the goal of this Centennial Season—expertly curated by Susan Booth and executed by our world-class Artistic, Education and Engagement, Production and Administrative teams—was to push past what was previously thought possible in order to serve more audiences, in more neighborhoods with more programs than ever before. As we look to begin 'our second century' this fall, we hope to build on this success achieved together with our audiences and supporters."

Iceboy! or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write "The Iceman Cometh," appears in the 856-seat Albert Theatre through August 16. For tickets ($74 - $259, subject to change) call 312.443.3800 (12 noon- 5pm) or purchase online at GoodmanTheatre.org/Iceboy. Looking for tickets to a sold-out performance? A limited number of $75 stand-by tickets are available for purchase on the day of performance (by telephone only). Additionally, a limited number of $20 tickets are offered through a daily lottery; visit TodayTix.com/Iceboy for details. The Goodman is grateful for the support of its Iceboy! sponsors: Edgerton Foundation (New Play Award), Mayer Brown (Lead Corporate Sponsor) and Athletico (The Official Physical Therapy Provider for Goodman Theatre).

In Iceboy!, Broadway's brightest star of 1939, Vera Vimm (Megan Mullally), is at the top of her game. But when she adopts a 40,000-year-old Neanderthal discovered frozen in the Arctic, the spotlight begins to shift. As Iceboy (Grey Henson) thaws, he unexpectedly becomes a theatrical sensation, inspiring the "father of the American drama" Eugene O'Neill (Nick Offerman) and challenging Vera for center stage. A "highly original, frothy nightcap to a Centennial Season of successful productions, and a nice way to kick off The Goodman's next act" (Newcity), Iceboy! features music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Jay Reiss—the Tony Award-winning creators behind Urinetown (Hollmann, with Greg Kotis) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Reiss, with Rachel Sheinkin and William Finn). Marc Bruni directs and JoAnn M. Hunter choreographs. The cast also includes Cedric Yarbrough (Comedy Central's Reno 911!), Tony Award nominee Sarah Stiles (Broadway's Tootsie) and Alex Goodrich (Marriott Theatre's Hero: The Musical), together with Donterrio (Nightbirds), Melanie Brezill (A Christmas Carol), Will Koski (Paramount Theatre's Into the Woods), Linda Mugleston (Broadway's The Music Man), Shawn Pfautsch (The Matchbox Magic Flute), Andrea San Miguel (The Penelopiad), Will Lidke (Theo Ubique's Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Leah Morrow (Marriott Theatre's Heartbreak Hotel) and Jeff Parker (Betrayal).

ABOUT THE GOODMAN

Since 1925, The Goodman has been more than a stage. A theatrical home for artists and a gathering space for community, it's where stories come to life—bold in artistry and rich in history, deeply rooted in the city it serves.

Led by Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Executive Director John Collins, The Goodman sparks conversation, connection and change through new plays, reimagined classics and large-scale musicals. With distinctions including nearly 200 world or American premieres, two Pulitzer Prizes, 22 Tony Awards and nearly 200 Joseph Jefferson Awards, The Goodman is proud to be the first theater to produce all 10 plays of August Wilson's "American Century Cycle." In addition, the theater frequently serves as a production partner—with national and international companies to Chicago's Off-Loop theaters—to help amplify theatrical voices.

But The Goodman believes a more empathetic, more connected Chicago is created one story at a time, and counts as its greatest legacy the community it's built. Generation-spanning productions and programs offer theater for a lifetime; from Theater for the Very Young (plays designed for ages 0-5) to the long-running annual A Christmas Carol, which has introduced new generations to theater over five decades, The Goodman is committed to being an asset for all of Chicago. Education and Engagement programs led by Clifford Director of Education and Engagement Jared Bellot and housed in the Alice Rapoport Center use the tools of theater to spark imagination, reflection and belonging. Each year, these programs reach thousands of people (85% from underserved communities) as well as educators, artists and lifelong learners across the city.

The Goodman was founded by William O. Goodman and his family to honor the memory of Kenneth Sawyer Goodman—a visionary playwright whose bold ideas helped shape Chicago's early cultural renaissance. That spirit of creativity and generosity endures today. In 2000, through the commitment of Mr. Goodman's descendants—Albert Ivar Goodman and his late mother, Edith-Marie Appleton—The Goodman opened the doors to its current home in the heart of the Loop.

Marsha Cruzan is Chair of the Goodman Theatre Board of Trustees; Diane Landgren is Women's Board President; and Kelli Garcia is president of the Scenemakers Board for Young Professionals.

Harrison Ghee will star as “Mary Todd Lincoln” when Oh, Mary! comes to Chicago for a strictly limited engagement from January 19— February 7, 2027, at Broadway In Chicago’s CIBC Theatre. Additional casting will be announced in the coming months.

Reservations for groups of 10+ are available now by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or calling 312-977-1710. Additional fees apply for online purchases. Individual tickets, with a select number of premium seats available, will go on sale to the public at a later date but audiences can register online at https://cloud.response.broadwayinchicago.com/oh-mary-email-sign-up to receive first access when tickets become available. “I have seen Oh, Mary! three times and relished the beauty of this show—how different people shine so brightly in these roles, and yet you see the influence of Cole all over the production. The opportunity to get a crack at Mary Todd Lincoln is beyond a dream come true,” said J. Harrison Ghee. “We all possess so much within us. If we surrender to circumstances, we will find the possibility for expansion beyond belief. We are going to set the road on fire with this electrifyingly hilarious play.”

Written by Tony and Olivier Award winner Cole Escola and directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, Oh, Mary! opened on Broadway on July 11, 2024, and continues to play at the Lyceum Theatre, where it became the first show in the theatre’s 121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week.

Oh, Mary! has since broken its own box office record thirteen times and became the first show of the 2024-25 Broadway season to recoup its investment. Oh, Mary! opened to rave reviews in London’s West End on December 18, 2025, and won the 2026 Olivier Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play.

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

The full creative team includes dots (Scenic Designer), Holly Pierson (Costume Designer), Cha See (Lighting Designer), Daniel Kluger (Sound Design and Original Music), Drew Levy (Sound Designer), Leah J. Loukas (Wig Designer), Addison Heeren (Props Supervision), and David Dabbon (Musical Arrangements). Casting by Henry Russell Bergstein, CSA.

Oh, Mary! is produced by Kevin McCollum & Lucas McMahon and Mike Lavoie & Carlee Briglia with Bob Boyett, The Council, Jean Doumanian Productions, Nicole Eisenberg, Jay Marcus & George Strus, Irony Point, Richard Batchelder/Bradley Reynolds, Tyler Mount/Tommy Doyle, Nelson & Tao, Palomares Miller & Rosenberg, and ShowTown Productions.

The nonprofit service organization 3Arts announces the date for its annual 3Arts Awards Celebration, a festive evening of dynamic performances by Chicago artists and the announcement of the recipients of unrestricted grants to artists working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts. The 2026 3Arts Awards Celebration takes place at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance (205 E Randolph) on Monday, October 26, at 5:30pm. Tickets for the event, which includes a welcome reception, awards program, and a jubilant after-party, are $150 (general admission) and $300 (VIP) with a limited number of $50 tickets available for industry professionals. Tickets will be available at 3arts.org/tickets in early September. Funds raised during the event will be split between 3Arts and Chicago nonprofit, Center for Native Futures.

"When artists rise, communities rise with them,” says Cat Tager, Executive Director of 3Arts. "Because art isn't a luxury; it's a foundation of any thriving community. As we head into our 20th year in 2027, we are looking forward to celebrating the milestone of putting $10 million directly into the hands of Chicago artists, and to continuing our mission to provide the critical programming that helps those artists to experiment, to take risks, and to elevate our communities.”

Thirty-six artists will be honored at this year’s program, which distributes unrestricted awards across three categories: the 3Arts Awards ($30,000 each), Next Level Awards ($50,000 each), and the peer-selected Make a Wave Awards ($2,000 each). The celebratory evening will also feature powerful performances by three past 3Arts awardees.

Expanded for 2026, the Next Level Awards will now include two awards in Music and two in Theater, made possible by support from the Paul Angell Foundation. This marks the first time these unrestricted grants will be available to musicians and theater artists, following the initiative's initial launch in Visual Arts (2020) and subsequent expansion into Teaching Arts.

3Arts has distributed more than $10 million in grants to more than 3,050 artists since 2007. 3Arts awardees reflect 66% women artists, 74% artists of color, and 17% Deaf or disabled artists.

About 3Arts

Founded in 1912 with a history centered on women artists and reimagined as an arts service organization in 2007, 3Arts supports artists in the Chicago metropolitan and greater Carbondale areas working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts, including women-identified artists, artists of color, and Deaf and disabled artists. The 3Arts Awards were launched in 2007 to provide unrestricted awards, project funding, residencies, professional development opportunities, and promotion to help artists take creative risks, build sustainable careers, and contribute to the cultural vitality of Chicago and the broader region.

3Arts extends special thanks to the 2026 Award Partners: The HMS Fund, The SIF Fund at the Chicago Community Foundation, Stan Lipkin & Evelyn Appell Lipkin, and MSU Federal Credit Union.

One of the ten 3Arts Awards, the 2026 3Arts/MSUFCU Community Award celebrates the collective generosity of artists and supporters across Chicago, whose contributions made the award possible.

3Arts also recognizes support for the Next Level Awards from an anonymous donor at The Chicago Community Foundation, the Paul Angell Foundation, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Carmela misses her papi, because papi is missing some of his papers.

Chicago Children’s Theatre presents Carmela Full of Wishes, a moving ode to family – and dreamers – adapted from the contemporary children’s book by Newbury Award-winners Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson, the same Newbery Medal and Caldecott Honor winning team behind Last Stop on Market Street.

Carmela Full of Wishes, a Chicago Children’s Theatre world premiere in 2022, returns to tell a warm, timely, and ultimately hopeful story about a sweet young Latina girl living in a big city who dreams of her dad getting his papers fixed so he can finally come home.

More relevant than ever, Carmela is the first of four of “greatest childhood hits” Chicago Children’s Theatre is reviving for its 21st birthday season. Full of touching, funny fantasies, the play portrays a little girl’s big city migrant community as a vibrant world of hope and possibility. The Chicago Tribune called it “a heartwarming tale of an exuberant Latina girl that celebrates family, community and hope — perfect themes for young audiences.” f

Public performances are October 25-November 15: Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Press openings are Sunday, October 26 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Run time is approximately one hour. (Residencies of Arts and Resilience) program, rooted in trauma-informed activities and conversations, provides opportunities for students to authentically reflect on challenging or stressful situations, gain the tools for sharing with others, self care and self agency in those moments, and promote coping mechanisms, social-emotional expression and resilience. CCT’s R.O.A.R. program was developed in partnership with the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Center for Childhood Resilience.
